A proposal to convert unused London rail tunnels into subterranean walking and cycling paths has been awarded Best Conceptual Project at the 2015 London Planning Awards.

Developed by design and architectural firm Gensler, The London Underline recasts the city’s abandoned metro lines as a network of pedestrian and bike paths.

This underground alternative transport space includes retail and cultural zones, and is powered by a kinetic energy system that converts footsteps into electricity.

Gensler designer Trevor To says that harnessing the energy of pedestrian footsteps means the collective efforts of citizens would help to unlock an ignored part of the city.

“This self-sustaining approach to urban infrastructure is key to a carbon-neutral community, and London could lead the world once again in merging tradition with innovation to create a better future.”
