The second week of Grand Designs NZ showcases a home made from unique materials.

When young Coromandel couple Gus and Sarah Anning realised they couldn’t afford a traditionally constructed home, they decided to step outside the norm.

They enlisted the help of community volunteers both in New Zealand and overseas and used unique building techniques originally designed for the desert in California.

Their resulting Earthship is built using recycled materials such as bottles and tyres – and even mussel shells for insulation.

But how will a home designed for the desert fare in Coromandel’s temperamental climate?

Owners - Gus & Sarah Anning

Architect - Harriet Pinkerton

Builder - Ben Garratt (Lives in Vancouver)
