Healthy Home Guide – Homestar rating by New Zealand Green Building Council

More about NZ Green Building Council and Homestar [http://www.nzgbc.org.nz/] Homestar looks at factors like energy, health and comfort to give a rating from one to ten. A warm, efficient home. It’s the ideal for most Kiwis - but too often our homes don’t perform well. Many New Zealand houses are cold, draughty and even damp. That doesn’t just mean higher power bills – it can impact family health, through illnesses like asthma. Homestar is the independent tool to rate and improve the performance of our homes. Homestar looks at factors like energy, health and comfort to give a rating from one to ten. How much insulation do you have? Is your home positioned to catch the sun? Do you have efficient appliances and fittings? Can you collect and reuse water within the home? All these things contribute to a Homestar rating. At the lower end are homes with no or poor insulation. New homes built to minimum Building Code rate around 4 Homestar. And increasingly Kiwis are opting for warmer, more efficient 6 Homestar homes. Even higher rated homes are being built in some areas. To work out where your house rates now, you can do a Homestar self-assessment online. If you’re planning to renovate, get advice from a Homestar professional early on, to help you make the right choices for a healthier home and lower bills. You can find a Homestar Assessor, as well as expert advice, at homestar.org.nz. Homestar was developed by the New Zealand Green Building Council and BRANZ specifically for NZ conditions.
