Trends International Design Awards
2017 International Winners

The selection of the TIDA international winners was the culmination of a series of awards for kitchens, bathrooms and homes held across 2017. In this final stage of judging, projects that had already proved to be award winners in New Zealand, Australia, USA, SE Asia and South Africa were judged against each other to determine the TIDA International winners.

2017 TIDA International Home of the Year

Winner: Vaughn McQuarrie Architect, Auckland

Raw materials left in their natural state and a novel approach to layout are key elements in the design of this award-winning home.

Judges' comment: Very well considered and careful detailing of materials to the main form and structure offer simplicity, restraint and a very controlled and balanced material palette.

This two-tone kitchen with its natural-look surfaces and concealed lighting is the perfect glossy fit for the wider elegant living spaces in an upmarket riverside home.

Judges' comment: This well-executed design takes full advantage of the home's views and outdoor space. The sculptural island provides a great focal point for entertaining, while the materials are elegant, while being durable for everyday use.

Judges' comment: Smart design to reconfigure three smaller rooms into one open plan, and opening the space to views on both sides. A very sophisticated and beautiful mix of materials.

Winner: Kirsten Stanisich, SJB Interiors, Sydney

The two bathrooms in this home needed to be open, accessible and sympathetic to the simplicity of the original, early Victorian double-fronted house. The result more than achieves those aims, with the help of some incredibly intricate tiling.

2015 TIDA International Winners

2015 TIDA International Bathroom of the Year

Contemporary bathroom insertion in heritage space by Architect Prineas Winner: Eva-Marie Prineas, Architect Prineas, Sydney

Architect Prineas’ bathroom design skilfully overcomes the challenges of providing all the requirements of a contemporary bathroom while at the same time respecting the character of the1890s Grand Italianate Sydney terrace in which it is found.

The bathroom itself is a mirror-clad central pod insertion in a space that retains original features such as the fireplace and the wooden floorboards.

This gives a clean, uncluttered look to the room, which is enhanced by a wealth of discreet storage.

2015 TIDA International Home of the Year

New home with glass walls and indoor-outdoor flow Winner: Craig Steere, Craig Steere Architects, Perth

This is a home with instant appeal.

On a functional level, architect Craig Steere has designed a home that’s ideal for a family with four mature sons – with separate spaces for the parents and younger members of the family, as well as communal areas where everyone could be together.

But it’s how those spaces are organised along the axis of the site and then tied together with innovative design elements that made the house the standout entry with the judges for TIDA International Home of the Year.

Designer Robin Caudwell has produced the perfect response to his client’s brief – they wanted simplicity and texture for their new kitchen, and a design that didn’t detract from the strong lines of the architecture of the home.

The result is a kitchen that integrates perfectly into its surroundings. It creates a strong presence without dominating, and feels light and elevated despite the heavy structures around it.
