Smooth, even surfaces are prerequisites for painting. For the best results, prepare surfaces using products such as Polystrippa paint stripper and the Polyfilla range of fillers

Well prepared

Professional painters agree; the more time spent preparing the area you're about to paint, the better the application will be.

Products such as Polystrippa paint stripper and the Polyfilla ready-to-use range of fillers from Poly® offer an easy and efficient way to prepare surfaces for painting.

How do you know if you need to strip existing paint? If the surface is in good condition, there should be no need to strip existing paint. However, if it is visibly bubbling, peeling or flaking, you will need to strip it.

How do you strip back existing paint? The quickest, simplest way is to use a chemical product such as Polystrippa. A fast-acting, solvent-based paint and varnish remover, it has a thick, gel-like consistency. Formulated with methylene chloride, it is well-suited to small applications as it evaporates quickly.

Polystrippa Renovator's Choice is free of methylene chlorine. It is therefore non-caustic, making it ideal for large areas.

Polystrippa can be used to strip paints and varnish from wood, metal, glass and ceramics. It will remove water-based paints and acrylics, enamel, lacquer, shellac or varnish. Polystrippa washes off in water and comes in convenient 250ml, 500ml, 1 litre, 2 litre and 4 litre tubs.

What sort of filler should you use? The choice of filler depends on the surface type and the nature of the surface imperfection. The Polyfilla ready-to-use range comes in five different formulations.

Polyfilla Plaster Cracks is suitable for plaster and plasterboard. Polyfilla Large Cracks is a multipurpose filler that can be used to fill deep and wide cracks. Polyfilla Skim Coat can be used to conceal fine surface imperfections, while Polyfilla Mirror Finish can be used on surfaces where an extremely smooth, flat finish is needed under gloss paints. Polyfilla Interior Timber can be stained to match the wood.

For larger surface imperfections with a significant amount of area to fill, versatile Polyfilla Powder comes in both interior and exterior formulations in 500g, 1kg and 2kg packs. It can be applied to surfaces, including plaster, timber and brick.
