Built into a large attic, this bathroom features a furniture look, with detailed ceilings and a dark wenge flooring

Introducing a bathroom to a room originally built for other purposes sometimes requires redefining the space on several fronts – including the floor and the ceiling.

For the project shown on these pages, architect R Stephen Chauvin was asked to design a master suite to fill a long, rectangular attic space.

"The ceiling shape, the flooring and the furniture all received special focus to pull the room together," says Chauvin. "Firstly, we vaulted areas of the existing roof line to emphasise the scale of the room and the original roof angle."

The architect introduced dark wenge flooring to anchor the space and provide continuity through to the bedroom.

At the entry, a wood and translucent glass door retracts into the wall to create the sense of an open living area. Furniture in an intermediary space between bedroom and bathroom, furthers this look.

"We designed and built almost everything in the bathroom, including the large limestone-tile bath surround and furniture-look vanity," he says. "Their generous size matches the room's scale, and the stone tiles reinforce the use of natural materials."

The bath is a central feature of the room. Aside from its wall-mounted pourer, the spa bath offers underwater lighting that changes the room's ambience as it switches from blue, to red, to green.

Another modern touch is the Kohler Purist Suite on the stone vanity. A mirror-mounted spout pours water onto a small dish, which then overflows down a tilting surface.
