A lot of wish fulfilment goes into your new home – from the big options like the roof style and style of cladding right down to the choice of kitchen finishes or the inclusion of that extra cupboard in the laundry. The best way to achieve a high-degree of customisation to your planned home is to be involved with the design from the outset and right through to completion.

This close bond between homebuilder and homeowner throughout the design and build process is very much the Fowler Homes way, as these two new homes reflect. The first house featured here is specifically designed mainly on one level to suit the owners' needs now and into the future, says Ivan Stanicich, managing director of Fowler Homes Christchurch, the Fowler Homes branch that undertook the construction of both these contemporary homes.

"To this end, the spacious master bedroom is on the ground level of the four-bedroom-plus-study home. Plus there are two teenagers in the family so, to provide a degree of separation, there is a large 7.5m by 5m wide loft over the double garage," says Stanicich. "Because it is separate from the main lounge and family room in the home proper, it provides the ideal teen hangout for listening to music or playing table tennis."

The home is social in other ways, too, with a spacious and light-filled entertainer's kitchen supported by a generous walk-in pantry.

Plus, the house is pretty much maintenance-free, having an autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) panel cladding system – a lightweight, durable system that's both economical and thermally efficient. This is finished with cement plaster for a smooth, visually pleasing exterior.

A major character feature of the home is the sprawling wrap-around deck that connects the home's many bedrooms to the outdoors.

The second home featured here is built of solid brick and has a Gerard tile Corona Shake roof that reflects the heritage of traditional tile roofs. This home is the third built by Fowler Homes for the owners – a mark of their belief and satisfaction with the nation-wide brand.

"This four-bedroom home is for an older couple whose main requirement was for flowing, open-plan interiors that run from entry to living areas to kitchen. This provides plenty of room for them to entertain their family," he says. "These public spaces are bathed in natural light, from the generous windows and skylights, making for a warm, welcoming feel. And the bedrooms are equally snug."

The kitchen is backed by a generous pantry, providing plenty of storage and work surfaces.

The bathrooms are also very well appointed, featuring wall-hung vanities for an increased sense of space.

And this home has its own touches of future-proofing. The bathrooms have a level floor entry into the tiled showers for safe and easy access.

"We have the know-how, processes, access to the best materials, and a broad set of plans that can be tweaked in myriad ways to create a custom home that ideally suits your lifestyle," says Stanicich. "However, our greatest strength is our personal, responsive connection with our customers. Everything has to be perfect."
