Decorative and textured wallcoverings are staging a popular revival in both contemporary and traditional homes
Arevival in the popularity of wallpaper does not mean a return to the nostalgic papers of the past – big swirling roses, frisky ponies or bold medallions. Rather, today's modern and muted patterns provide a subtle backdrop to most decorating schemes.
Wallcoverings can add depth, texture and visual interest to a room, creating warmth, reflecting light and adding character and personality.
Ranges from Vision Wallcoverings include pearl and metallic finishes that add a sheen and lustre to your walls, pleated and quilted effects to give surface interest, or subtle abstract and natural textures that enhance a minimalist interior.
Shelley-Maree Cassidy of Vision Wallcoverings says the current trend for mixing styles means even "pretty" patterns can be successfully used in a sleek, contemporary room.
"Some of the new, textured papers bridge the gap between old and new decorating schemes. These include the natural look of linen, hessian, suede and timber veneer effects, and give a real appeal to walls," she says.
Whether you select a plain, textured paper in neutral tones or prefer vibrant colours, or choose between subtle or bold patterns, wallcoverings will add interest and personality to the interior of your home. Traditional classics, such as a Regency stripe, updated in colour and scale, bring symmetry and balance to a space, while floral and botanical papers create a serene, natural atmosphere.
A sophisticated, neutral look is always popular. Alternatively, walls can be covered with a two-tone, softly coloured check or a tone-on-tone stripe or pattern. Papers such as this provide a clean backdrop for art, upholstery and accessories.
For rooms in small apartments, or with few architectural features, wallcoverings can add an interesting edge. They can also help to define or divide zones in an open-plan area.
As well as their aesthetic qualities, wallcoverings can be a practical solution. The stylish designs and textures of modern papers will conceal the imperfections of old walls. Some papers can be painted over to match other walls in the house. Wallcoverings are generally easy-care and washable, and solid, textured vinyl papers are well suited to high-traffic areas of the home.
