Natural materials and warm tones transform this master bathroom into a relaxing retreat

When renovating, one factor to bear in mind is how long you plan to stay in the home.

The owners of this home had originally intended to move on fairly quickly. But after six years, they decided they liked the house and locality, and chose to renovate instead. As they expect to stay for some years, they felt it was worth spending time and effort on their master bathroom.

Interior designer Lucy Aiken-Johnson says they wanted to create a private retreat with a spa-like feel.

The new bathroom includes a large, two-person bath, a shower with a tiled seat, and a vanity that includes a special make-up area. The toilet is tucked out of sight in a separate closet.

"The walls are painted in shades of white and off-white and the shower, bath surround and floor are tiled in limestone. A window makes the bathroom light and bright, creating a calm, warm and relaxing space," she says.

Glass-paneled pocket doors for the entry and toilet maximise the light and save space. For privacy, the glass used for the doors and the window is covered with translucent film.

To provide contrast, the vanity is finished in a dark wenge veneer. Drawers and cupboards to one side provide storage for make-up, hair dryers and other toiletries. A white marble countertop contrasts with the vanity.

The light-coloured wooden chair, much loved by the owners, adds a sculptural element to this otherwise simple, clean and minimal space.
