Retro Smeg appliances make a splash
This new kitchen in a flat proves that size is no barrier when it comes to creating a kitchen that's a real conversation piece.
Kitchen designer Vikki Whyte of Millbrook Kitchens says the owner of the flat had already chosen the bright red Smeg FAB32 refrigerator and matching BLV dishwasher, and asked her to design a kitchen around these.
"The owner loves the retro look," Whyte says. "He has fitted out the rest of the flat with retro-inspired furniture and fittings, including many authentic items he has found online, such as the red light fixture in the kitchen. He also had the red Coke fridge and wanted to incorporate this into the design."
Whyte specified lacquered cabinets with the same high-gloss intensity as the refrigerator, with black making a dramatic contrast to the red. The red overhead cabinets were colour matched to the exact shade of the Smeg appliances, and a single white high-gloss cabinet chosen to frame the Smeg microwave. A splashback featuring high-gloss backpainted mirror glass helps to make the whole space seem larger.
"For consistency we also chose a Smeg oven and cooktop," says the designer. "The owner wanted everything to light up, and the Smeg Linea pyrolytic oven has illuminated knobs that fit with the whole look."
The Smeg cooking appliances also provide all the functionality required for entertaining.
