Want a glimpse of the future? With the new iOS 11 update for iPhones and iPads you can downloaded augmented reality-enabled apps and start playing

Augmented reality could make it much easier to plan a project at home

Augmented reality (AR), long something you’d see in science-fiction movies, is now available for iPhone and iPad users who have the latest version of Apple’s operating system. By downloading the update and then installing AR-enabled apps, you can do some seriously cool stuff.

For those new to AR, here’s what it’s all about.

It helps to think of AR as a mix between a video game and real life. Just point your phone or tablet camera at the real world, and digital objects are overlaid using your screen.

For a more technical explanation, research organisation Gartner defines it as the “real-time use of information in the form of text, graphics, audio and other virtual enhancements integrated with real-world objects”.

Here’s what app developers have been able to do so far with the new update for iPhones and iPads:

See how furniture looks in your home

With Housecraft, you can drop pieces of furniture directly into a room and see how they look. For example, if you’ve got a guest bedroom and you want to see how a certain bed would fit in the space, open the app, scan the floor and start positioning. AR also allows you to walk around, meaning you can view the furniture from different angles.

It’s impressive – the app even displays realistic shadows.

Measure distances accurately

How often have you been in the middle of a project, only to find yourself without a tape measure? AR MeasureKit lets you measure things around you accurately. Try the app alongside a real ruler – you’ll be surprised at just how accurate it is.

Home projects with AR

AR may seem quite advanced – but it’s only just getting started. In the near future, it’s not hard to imagine being able to plan your entire renovation or redecoration with the phone in your pocket.

Picture this: You simply slide out your phone, point it at a room, and start flicking through paint, furniture and fitting options. Once you’re happy, take the finished concept to your designer.

Feel ready to dive into the exciting world of AR? All you need to do is download iOS 11 on your iPhone or iPad (if your device is supported). Then, you can install AR-enabled apps and start planning your home renovation project.
