Teamwork combined with precise co-ordination is often the key to successfully completing a project within a tight timeframe.

This was the case when Stan Ash Builders won the full contract to build the new JJ Hamilton's Irish Pub, which forms part of Hamilton's refurbished Chief Post Office. The company's previous work with the client on a similar job in Auckland stood it in good stead to take on this project, says director Geoff Ash.

"The bar has been modelled on an authentic Irish bar, with working drawings completed here in New Zealand. Providing the client with the look he was after required lots of attention to detail, from the materials used through to the methods of construction."

To create the rustic feel of an Irish pub, a large amount of demolition timber was used. The floors are recycled Oregon pine, while the exposed beams, made from the same material, bring the ceiling's proportions down and enhance the bar's cosy atmosphere. Petrified gum tree branches were shaped into balustrading for the stage and mezzanine areas. Another challenge was installing the gum tree that sits adjacent to the bar area.

"Very much a visual focal point, the tree stands at approximately 4.5m high and has massive branches that span the width of the room. Using a forkhoist to crane it in, it took seven men one whole day to get it into position."

To complement the traditional theme, schist stonework was used to detail the columns, fireplace and entrance doors.

At any one point in time, up to 10 subcontractors were working in what was a relatively small space. Because of this, teamwork was essential, says Geoff Ash. Added to this was the challenge of working within the infrastructure of an old building, where services to the tenancy had to be co-ordinated and various compliance issues resolved.
