Views of the sea from the tub are a highlight of this private, yet very open-plan, master suite

Sitting in a spa contemplating views over water sounds like a good way to take a bath. However, because of privacy and plumbing issues, designers and architects sometimes have to think laterally to make views possible.

In this home, the master bedroom was well-positioned to enjoy the sun and panoramic views. The challenge for the design team, homeowner Graham Molineux and Brad Read from Brad Read Design, was to devise a method of opening up the adjacent ensuite to the view.

"By incorporating a large, glassless interior window into the ensuite wall, we gave bathers clear sight lines out through the sliding glass patio doors," says Molineux.

Beside the bath, a C-Bus control panel can be used to remotely open and close a set of drapes, and operate the lighting and television.

The home's circular shape also provided challenges. The vanity cabinetry, finished in brilliant white, was custom built to follow the line of the back wall.

"To set up and make the ensuite flow while maintaining symmetry was tricky. All the curves and lighting radiate outwards. There are also no doors, so wall placement was important. Interior windows on each side of the vanity were introduced to let light into the shower stall and the toilet."

The ensuite's clean white tiling and colour scheme is given a nautical touch by the chrome fittings. To make the surfaces easy to clean, all tile edges were fitted with an aluminium cap.
