The design of a vast manufacturing facility built five years ago has proved so successful that Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corporation chose to repeat the formula for their latest project

A move to new, purpose-built premises provides an ideal opportunity for a company to invest in up-to-date technology, and the Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Stage 3 project was no exception. To ensure all systems would function as required, Electrix was given the responsibility of wiring the state-of-the-art facility.

Electrix Regional Manager Steve Bartlett says the building features New Zealand's largest Clipsal C-Bus® control and management system, which includes 8km of C-Bus network data cable.

"This facility is, in fact, the largest Clipsal C-Bus industrial installation in the Asia Pacific region," he says. "In total, the work included 3km of 11kV cabling from a 33kV/11kV substation, four 1000kVA transformers, seven main switchboards and 70 distribution boards, plus in excess of 100km of mains and sub-mains cabling."

Bartlett says one of the greatest challenges was the installation of the parallel 630mm mains cables along circuitous routes in ceiling voids and underground ducts.

Electrix was also responsible for the power reticulation fit-out for the manufacturing area in the new facility. Bartlett says the original construction programme man hours were increased by 25% to accommodate this additional work, which had to be completed within the original time frame. Electrix brought on a separate team to facilitate this work.

Electrix is a wholly owned subsidiary of international construction company McConnell Dowell Corporation. Other large projects undertaken by the company include the Telstra Clear Stadium at Manukau City, the Nautilus apartments in Orewa and the Precinct apartments in Auckland City, the Bayfair Shopping Mall in Mt Maunganui, new correctional facilities in Kaikohe, Northland and Hampton Downs, Waikato, and the Q City/Q Central development in Auckland City, to name just a few.
