When you own a period home, extending it can sometimes be a challenge. See how Detail 9 Architects handled this particular extension

The hanging fireplace is a retro touch

Architect: Detail 9 Architects Pty Ltd

About the project (text supplied): When you own a period home, extending it can sometimes be a challenge. Bringing modern day conveniences into a piece of living history requires careful consideration and an understanding of the key features of the period to ensure that any alterations do not diminish the value of the home.

Teaming up with Secret Design Studio, Detail 9 Architects have cleverly added a master bedroom wing, along with additional living space and a huge basement/wine cellar.

Sometimes, you can have the best of both worlds!

What was the brief?

The clients desperately needed more living space and to provide areas in the house to accommodate their children's needs as they move into teenagehood.

What were the key challenges?

Some of the extension was actually added to the front of the house. This required careful consideration to ensure that the key features of the period were not lost.

Who are the clients and what's interesting about them?

Our clients were passionate about mid-century design and had a big investment in the fitting out of their home. This meant that both the exterior and interior were seamless.
