Dakota Murphey has put together a step-by-step guide to help you get rid of the old and bring in the new in your living room
A quick and easy way to uplift your home interior is to replace and refine your soft furnishings. It doesn’t require a decorator and it doesn’t necessarily have to cost you a small fortune. Updating your soft furnishings is a quick and easy way to put the life back into your home.
Don’t worry if you are feeling overwhelmed and you’re not sure where to start. We’ve put together a quick and easy step-by-step guide to help you get rid of the old and bring in the new. Here’s how to transform your living space in 7 easy steps.
1. Consult the experts
If interior design really isn’t for you, it may be worth investing in the expertise of a cool interior designer. Pfeiffer Design, for example, can help with everything from conceptual layout to bespoke furnishings, and fabrics for upholstery and curtains.
Some interior designers offer an initial free consultation, so if you are undecided whether or not to employ such services, why not meet with a few to see if the service they are offering is for you.
Even if you don’t wish to employ an interior designer, interior design magazines and websites are great resources for inspiration, so it’s still worth consulting the experts in one way or another.
2. Give your window treatments an upgrade
Are your window treatments faded, broken or difficult to open and close? Perhaps they no longer match your interior? If curtain edges are frayed or tatty, blind slats discoloured, or if roman or roller blinds are no longer looking their best, updating them could be all you need to do to give your room a lift.
If you are choosing new window treatments, it could be a good time to consider switching to something completely different. Don’t think you have to stick with the same style or same type of window treatment, especially if you want to create a new look for your interior.
Don’t be afraid to use window treatments to add a pop of colour or pattern to a serene living space. Or perhaps consider plantation shutters if you want to give your living space a more refined feel.
3. Pimp up your scatter cushions
For plainly decorated living spaces, scatter cushions are the ideal medium for bringing colour and pattern to your interior. To spread the cost, invest in a couple of really good cushions with unusual patterns, and bring together with some cheaper ones in blocks of colour to match. Mixing and matching scatter cushions is the perfect way to put your own stamp on your living space.
4. Style up your rugs
Rugs can really bring a room together. Changing your rug could be all you need to do to lift your room from ordinary to extraordinary. Patterned rugs look fabulous against a blank canvas and can create an interesting focal point in any room. A good quality rug will add an air of luxury.
Most importantly, choose a rug as you would a piece of art. Think about whether you want a statement piece or a simple neutral piece to bring an area together.
5. Reupholster your favourite tired chair
We’ve all got one – a favourite piece of furniture we can’t bear to get rid of. Well the good news is you don’t have to be parted. Why not give your favourite old armchair a makeover instead. You’ll be amazed at how reupholstering an armchair can transform a room.
Whether you choose plush velvet, or an unusual sumptuous pattern to reupholster with, your revamped chair will bring a unique style to your living room. If you don’t feel confident to have a go at upholstery yourself, get a reputable upholsterer to do it for you.
6. Cover a multitude of furnishing sins with a glamorous throw
Replacing a big furniture item isn’t always financially viable. But do nothing, and your tired interior could start to get you down. Sofas and chairs that have seen better days can easily be covered up with a throw. Even a good quality blanket can make all the difference.
7. Coordinate your wall art with soft furnishings
It’s not always easy to work out which colours clash and which colours match. If you are struggling to come up with a colour scheme for your soft furnishing revamp, take a close look at the other accessories and art in the room. Pick out a colour in one of your prized pieces of art or match colours with ceramics.
Go with a theme and it will make your room sing. Always choose colours that make you smile, and you can’t go wrong.
