Glow in the dark

Strategically placed exterior lighting lets you make the most of your outdoor areas at night as well as during the day. But outdoor lighting can be employed in other ways.

Exterior lighting adds ambience and enhances outdoor entertaining areas. It is also a valuable security feature, says Dean Fulford from Lighting Direct.

"It can be used as a tool to accentuate architectural features and hard landscaping elements, such as walls and pillars."

For example, the lighting at the front of the house shown here is designed to create impact and accentuate the street frontage.

Square Nautilus in-ground uplights highlight the front wall. These 35W halogen lights are waterproof and come with a robust die-cast aluminium casing.

These uplights wash a wall with light from the ground up, accenting it as a design feature. Their flush, in-ground design gives a clean, minimal look.

Stainless steel Eurolite outdoor halogen downlights in the garage entry illuminate the door and provide additional security.

The front door of the house is flanked by Italian-made Prisma Tango exterior wall lights. These die-cast aluminium lights have an adjustable face that shields the light source and can be altered to create different effects.
