R estoring a home to its former glory is an opportunity to recapture a little bit of history. Thanks to innovative design and technology, designers and homeowners now have access to products and materials that offer the charm and character of yesterday without compromising the convenience of today.

This home – designed by architect Samuel Farr and built in 1852 in the South Island town of Akaroa by French settlers – has been restored, preserving its original French colonial style. The renovation of the house includes two bedrooms designed to provide boutique bed-and-breakfast accommodation.

When it came to creating the ensuites, the owner says he selected Kohler bathroom fittings and fixtures to help replicate the home's original heritage and charm, while providing modern functionality and comfort for his guests.

"In the tradition of the French colonial style, the interiors are simple in both design and colour.

To maintain this feel, it was important that the bathroom fixtures complemented the crisp, clean look rather than detracted from it."

Products from the Revival range and tapware from the Fairfax collection achieved these objectives.

A Revival bidet, toilet suite and a pedestal basin, all in white, complement the neutral colour palette of the bathrooms.

Revival accessories including a soap-dish holder, towel ring, oval mirror, toilet-roll holder and glass shelf complete the look. Blending European style and early American influences, Revival accessories help to create a sense of continuity in bathrooms. The pieces feature clean lines and a sleek profile, each designed to complement the other.

Featuring an elliptical form and rolled edges, each piece from the Revival suite offers a distinctly romantic look. The range comprises an extensive selection of fixtures, faucets and accessories, all of which are renditions of designs inspired by 1920s Art Deco style.

Whether in a traditional or an eclectic modern bathroom, the Revival range can be used to set the scene, making it a versatile option for all styles of décor.

Fairfax tapware adds the finishing touch to the bathrooms. The taps feature a sculpted profile that combines classical style with easy operation. Fairfax tapware features an all-metal construction and reliable ceramic disc valving to emphasise performance.
