Whichever way you look, the design of this master suite provides a visual treat

Designers are often called on to maximize a small space, but sometimes the challenge is just the opposite. At more than 1000sq ft, this master suite is large by anyone's standards and, for the designer, the key challenge was containing the space to strike a balance between aesthetics and functionality.

Henry Li of Steve Leung Designers says the client wanted the master suite to be a luxurious, contemporary living space.

"Such an atmosphere could only be achieved by integrating each part of the suite to create a harmonious whole," he says.

To provide the required visual connection, the design team specified a transparent glass wall between the bedroom and bathroom. As well as helping to unify the space, the glass ensures the owners can enjoy the spectacular ocean views from the freestanding bathtub.

Li says the entry to the bathroom, known as the dry area, is a transition space that links the bedroom with the other bathroom facilities and the his-and-hers walk-in closets beyond. A skylight provides additional natural light.

The vanity unit is opposite the tub in the dry area. Set within a large, illuminated marble niche, the vanity is flanked by sculptural pieces mounted on mirrored pedestal cabinets.

"The mirrored vanity cabinet, which has a marble top, was designed as a contemporary piece of furniture," says Li. "The reflective surfaces enhance the glittering, luxurious look of the suite, and the sense of space."

A second glass door opens to the walk-in closets, featuring sleek cherry wood cabinets. Distinctive elements here include the extra-long counter and backlit glass wall. A large mirror suspended in front of a frosted window adds to the five-star ambiance.
