A project the size of the Britomart Transport Centre needs to be carefully planned and managed by an experienced team of consultants
In any major transport centre, the operating systems are a crucial element. To ensure the Britomart systems were of the highest quality and safety standards, the Auckland City Council commissioned URS to design the rail and signalling systems and to assist in the supervision of their construction and installation.
The URS New Zealand team, included project director Ross Sharp and civil and rail engineering specialists David Perry from Toronto, Blair Rogers, Dragan Krusic and Peter Hadwin from URS Auckland, with input and review from other URS international rail personnel. Together the team designed approximately 1km of double-track rail lines connecting to the five-platform underground station. The lines include conventional ballast track and track directly mounted on concrete slabs using special supports known as Cologne eggs. These minimise vibration from passing trains.
URS designed and specified state-of-the-art, computer-based signalling systems and worked with Britomart's architects to develop an adaptable platform design.
