A project the size of the Britomart Transport Centre needs to be carefully planned and managed by an experienced team of consultants
Attention to detail and understanding the needs of the travelling public were the two key concerns for the company involved in getting Britomart's systems and facilities ready to receive the first passenger train.
Auckland Regional Transport Network Ltd (ARTNL) manages the day-to-day operation of the centre. It was in charge of establishing protocols to ensure high safety standards, while maintaining performance and cost effectiveness.
Mark Townsend, ARTNL's Britomart and commercial development manager, says that as the centre is the first underground station in the world to operate diesel trains, the company couldn't adapt existing systems. ARTNL had to create systems and protocols unique to Auckland's rail network and the needs of its passengers, he says.
"In this respect, Britomart is creating the standard for future transport projects."
ARTNL uses an integrated Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA) to monitor and control air quality, lighting, security and drainage systems.
