Buying an existing home usually means living with someone else's decor, for a short while at least.

When interior designer Fiona Wilson and her family moved into a new house, it was the master bathroom that grabbed the attention – for all the wrong reasons.

"The bathroom was lined with black and apricot faux marble. I wanted a much more relaxing, feminine space that could be a real sanctuary."

With her extensive design experience, Wilson says choosing the material palette was not difficult.

"I have long admired the strong textural look of Ashlar marble mosaic tiles – and their sense of visual movement. These mosaics provided a starting point – they feature on a suspended wall panel above the tub, and also line the tub surround."

Wilson paired the mosaics with another favourite stone – Elba marble.

"Large 600mm x 300mm modules were chosen for the wall and floor tiles. The large format helps to make a relatively small space seem larger. Similarly, running the same floor tiles up the wall enhances the spacious look, and is in keeping with the luxury theme I was looking to create."

Wilson says she was able to retain the original footprint of the bathroom, but provided new fixtures. The vanity basin and integrated top, toilet and bidet are from the square-edged Duravit Vero collection.

A cantilevered vanity unit, mirrored medicine cabinet and Kartell stool further enhance the contemporary look.
