There is an expectation that apartments in prime locations will have interiors with a high standard of specification. But this isn't always the case – just like any home, an apartment interior can look tired after 15 or more years.

When Carlos Carvalho bought an apartment with a spectacular water view, he wanted the rest of the interior to be equally impressive.

"The apartment building is 16 years old and the bathrooms in particular were in need of updating," he says. "People coming into the apartment are instantly wowed by the view – I wanted guests to be wowed by the bathrooms also."

To create such an interior, Carvalho went looking for fixtures and fittings that offer something a little different.

"I had a lot of help from the design team at SpazioCasa," he says. "The company was able to custom manufacture the cantilevered double vanity, which features black lacquer and a glass top.

"SpazioCasa also proposed a rearranged layout for the main bathroom. The shower, which was formerly in the middle of the room, was moved to one side, making the room more spacious."

For dramatic effect, the walls at either end of the bathroom are in a black ceramic, marble-look tile. In the centre, similar ceramic tiles in white wrap the floor and walls, providing a bold contrast to the vanity and end walls.

Carvalho also introduced blue LED lighting strips with motion sensors, one above the shower and one over the toilet.

"The lighting bathes the room with a soft blue glow, and illuminates the space by night, so there is no need for anyone to stumble around in the dark."

To enhance the modern, European look of the room, Italian designer tapware was specified for the vanity basins and shower fittings.
