Elliot Stables redevelopment by Mt Olympus Properties
At a time when most developers were lying low, Gary Hill and Harry Van Hoppe of Mt Olympus Properties purchased a pair of neglected, Victorian-era buildings last properly refurbished in the 1930s.
Eleven years later, the pair have just about restored all the character to the properties.
"It's been a long-held dream of mine to restore such buildings," says Hill. "My great-grandfather helped build a number of similar buildings around the city, so I guess you could say it's in the blood."
From the outset, Hill and Van Hoppe realised that the true worth of the property lay in diversification. Several existing tenancies have been reinstated to establish a European-style food village, with artisanal eateries, cafés and restaurants. Two separate buildings include 64 apartments, a backpacker hostel, 25 retail tenancies, and 10 car parks.
"I've lived in Elliott Stables for 11 years, and understand and love every part of it," says Hill. "It has an atmosphere you can't experience anywhere else in the city. The current Elliott and Darby Street upgrade, along with the proximity to the entertainment district will ensure Elliott Stables remains a vibrant, integral part of the city's future."
