This Italian kitchen combines a bold use of color with a practical, open layout
Renovating your kitchen is the perfect opportunity to improve its functionality – however, it is the chance to create a fresh aesthetic at the heart of the home that is the impetus for many people.
This colorful kitchen was created by the designers at Kitchens Atlanta as a surprise for one of the owners. The original tired wood panel kitchen was out of step with other interiors in the house, already updated with bold colors and contrasts.
The owner loves motor racing and the new kitchen's rich surfaces were inspired by the gleaming colors of an Aston Martin, says designer Simon Coltman.
"With such a strong palette, getting the color balance right was really important in achieving a harmonious outcome."
With this in mind, the vibrant red of the feature wall is repeated on the floating island counter. Deeper reds on the glass-fronted upper cabinetry and the textured glass tile backsplash were chosen in part to complement this racy color.
In turn, these reds are all offset by black base cabinetry and dark countertops.
"This kitchen is about reflection just as much as it is about color – the black lacquer, in particular, dries naturally to a near-mirror finish," says Coltman. "These surfaces ensure natural light penetrates right through the space. At the same time, the combination of color and sheen turns the kitchen into an attractive focus for the adjacent living spaces."
In addition, this entertainer's kitchen offers strategic work triangles, a range of mainly integrated appliances and an easy connection to the living and dining areas.
