Concrete, metal and glass softened by colour and texture, provide a dramatic backdrop for the Britomart Transport Centre

Back on track

Ease of moving about within the Britomart Transport Centre was taken care of by specially designed lifts and escalators. Custom-designed, engineered and manufactured in New Zealand by Schindler Lifts, most of the six passenger lifts and 11 escalators in the centre are finished in plain or mirror-finish stainless steel and glass panelling.

Car and landing doors are glass panelled. Car interiors are finished in stainless steel and coved ceilings are made from mirror-finish stainless.

To achieve design continuity within the main concourse, the joins in the glass balustrades of the escalators and their stainless steel outer cladding are lined up with specific building grid lines and join lines in the floor. Schindler custom-designed both the layout of the cladding and the glass joins.

To save energy, escalators have a variable frequency drive, slowing to a crawl when no passengers are detected after a preset time. Sensors then detect approaching passengers and escalators accelerate to full speed.
