Another touch that helps to give the stationits particular character is the use of basalt as a feature throughout.

Trethewey Granite and Marble was commissioned to supply and install Auckland isthmus basalt for the water features, walls, stairs, landings and surrounds in the station and former CPO. The company also supplied the stone that forms the bases of the seats on the platforms, as well as the boulders for the landscaped areas in the station and streetscapes.

Director Bruce Trethewey says his company was particularly pleased that the Auckland City Council appointed a local manufacturer to workin partnership with the main contractor, Downers, to process and install local materials throughout the project.

"It was particularly satisfying to be able to provide these materials and our expertise for such a prestigious project – one that is designed especially for Aucklanders," says Trethewey.
