Concrete, metal and glass softened by colour and texture, provide a dramatic backdrop for the Britomart Transport Centre
Stainless steel is a unifying element throughout the station. Consolidated Engineering's role was to fabricate and install a range of mirror-finished stainless steel architectural and structural elements. To ensure a consistent finish, material in pre-polished sheet stock form was used extensively, minimising the amount of manual, post-fabrication polishing.
All the 316BA and 316 No 8 mirror-polished stainless steel was supplied by Corus Metals, whose brief was to provide stainless steel with a high-quality surface finish. Corus Metal's ability to import BA coil and cut on the dedicated stainless steel line offered a substantial saving on materials and wastage. Consolidated Engineering fabricated and installed the fire-hose reel cabinets, glazed column cabinets on the platforms and lift architraves. The company also installed the coloured, textured stainless steel wall and sculpture pole claddings and stainless steel mesh cladding on the main lift towers and ventilation buildings.
