Many kitchen projects evolve over a period of a few months, while owners and designers research styles, materials and colours.

This remodelling project was no exception, says kitchen designer Bill Dellinger of Cooper Pacific.

"The house, on a golf course, was part of a high-end development – the owners bought it new about 20 years ago, but had not had any input into its design, which was quite traditional," Dellinger says. "We worked with the architect while the design concept evolved from traditional, through transitional to highly contemporary."

Dellinger says the kitchen was pushed out a little, creating enough space for a bank of freestanding cabinets and a dining table.

Rift-cut white oak wraps right around the freestanding unit, reinforcing the sense of a box inserted into the space.

The island and perimeter cabinets are also in white oak, with recessed pulls on all the doors except for the ones beside the dishwasher.

"We provided vertical pulls for the tall cabinets to reinforce their sleek, uncluttered lines," Dellinger says.

"We wanted the overhead cabinets to make a strong design statement, so these were wrapped in canvas, and one of the owners created a colourful artwork."

The modern aesthetic is further enhanced by stainless steel edges on two wood shelves above the cooktop, and by a recessed metal strip that creates a negative detail around the benchtops.
